Who Is She?

My name is Kait and I am a fiber artist. I love to mix mediums and stretch beyond what is typically thought of as embroidery. My interest in modern embroidery began with a bag of hoops and embroidery floss that belonged to my grandmother and has grown in to my primary form of self-expression. After falling in love with thread work, I set out to create unique pieces through an embroidery technique called ‘thread painting’. The idea behind this technique is to mix colors of thread to create images that look like they have been painted instead of stitched. I then began integrating fabric paint and watercolor pencils in to my work, especially in pieces that primarily feature line drawings or minimalist images. I have also experimented with utilizing wool, yarn, and, most recently, stitching dried flowers on to tulle.

My work reflects both my sense of humor, and my darker aesthetic. I oscillate between using bright and expressive colors on cheeky, sometimes irreverent pieces about mental health and body image and greyscale pieces depicting people and animals. The majority of my work heavily features the color black, but I like to create a balance.

I find that the more inclusive I am with my pieces (representing different races, body types, gender identities and sexuality), the more connected I feel to my community. Being seen and allowing others to feel seen through my art drives me to create.
